A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
