France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.

French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and individuals.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."

Now, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.

Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.

This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.

Currently French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.

Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
