"When are you interviewing Haim?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated fans have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals often depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to make music."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Milestone

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
